Note to Students
Each week you are required to read a minimum of 1 hour outside of class. You will be given a weekly reading sheet, which you are to fill out, have your parents sign, and return on Monday. This is a weekly reading assignment for which you will be given five points.
Each month you will be required to read a particular type of book as the schedule shows. The required books, with the exception of Accelerated Reader (AR), must be a minimum of 140 pages at your reading level. AR books must total a minimum of 9 points to quality as books read during the month.
Each quarter: The outside reading accounts for 20% of your reading grade for the second and fourth quarter and 30% of the first and third quarter.
********There are several books (Johnny Tremain, Rifles for Waite, Devil’s Arithmetic, The Light in the Forest, Woodsong, Call of the Wild, Slave Dancer, Cheaper by the Dozen, Time Enough for Drums, Sounder, The Last Silk Dress and Witch of Blackbird Pond) that we will be reading this year during our reading class. If you read these before they are read in class you will not receive any outside reading credit.********
Note to Parents
Parents, sign and return the bottom part of this note. Please make sure that your child reads outside of class on a regular basis. Not only will that ensure them a better reading grade but it will also help their reading speed, comprehension, and vocabulary skills.

I understand when the book reports are due each month and I will do my best to encourage my child to read on a regular basis. I am also aware that if my child doesn’t do outside reading their grade will be reduced significantly.
